TRAINING PROGRAMS

Miramichi Ground Search and Rescue is renowned for its rigorous and comprehensive training program, designed to equip both new recruits and seasoned searchers with the skills, confidence, and resilience needed to operate effectively in diverse environments. Whether navigating dense forest terrain, involved in multi-agency responses, or supporting vulnerable individuals in crisis, MGSAR’s training ensures every team member is prepared to meet the challenge.

FOUNDATIONAL TRAINING FOR NEW RECRUITS

New members begin with a robust onboarding process that introduces them to the core principles of search and rescue. This includes ground search techniques, map and compass, GPS navigation, radio communications, and first aid skills. First aid certification, including wilderness first aid, is another cornerstone, enabling searchers to provide immediate care in remote settings. MGSAR emphasizes hands-on learning—recruits don’t just study theory; they practice in simulated field conditions, often in challenging weather and terrain. Safety protocols, teamwork, and situational awareness are drilled early and often, laying the groundwork for operational readiness.

STANDARDIZED STRUCTURE

Recruits also receive training in Incident Command System (ICS 100–200), ensuring they understand the structure and communication flow during real deployments. Many go on to complete ICS 300, preparing them to take on leadership roles such as Field Team Leader in complex operations.

ADVANCED AND ONGOING TRAINING FOR VETERAN SEARCHERS

Veteran members are encouraged to continually expand their expertise. MGSAR offers specialized modules such as Project LifeSaver, which trains searchers to locate individuals with cognitive conditions like autism or Alzheimer’s using radio-frequency tracking. This program blends technical skill with compassionate care, reflecting MGSAR’s commitment to community-focused service.

Experienced searchers also participate in mock searches that simulate real-world scenarios. These drills test endurance, decision-making, and coordination under pressure. Many veterans take on mentorship roles, guiding new recruits and sharing field-tested wisdom that strengthens team cohesion.

TECHNOLOGY AND TACTICAL SKILLS

MGSAR integrates modern tools like SARTopo mapping and GPS devices into its training. Members learn to customize maps for search planning, interpret terrain features, and coordinate search segments with precision. This digital literacy ensures the team remains agile and informed, even in rapidly evolving situations.

TEAM CULTURE AND LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT

Beyond technical skills, MGSAR fosters a culture of empathy, resilience, and mutual support. Training often includes scenario-based storytelling, where members reflect on past missions to extract lessons and celebrate successes. Leadership workshops and communication training help build morale and prepare members to lead with clarity and compassion.

COMMITTEMENT TO EXCELLENCE

MGSAR’s training is not a one-time event—it’s a continuous journey. The team regularly updates its curriculum to reflect best practices, emerging technologies, and lessons learned from searches across New Brunswick and beyond. This commitment to growth ensures that every member, from rookie to veteran, remains sharp, capable, and deeply connected to the mission. In Miramichi, search and rescue is more than a skill—it’s a calling. And through its extensive training program, MGSAR ensures that every volunteer is ready to serve with purpose, competence, and heart.

TRAINING IS AS GOOD AS THE INSTRUCTORS TEACHING

Training succeeds when instructors bring clarity, experience, and commitment to every GSAR subject. Strong teaching builds confidence, sharpens skills, and prepares teams for real‑world challenges. When instructors lead with expertise and passion, trainees absorb more, perform better, and uphold the high standards essential to effective ground search and rescue operations. MGSAR is fortunate to have a highly talented pool of instructors. We can’t do it without them. Thank you.
